Castel Paterno, Faleria

Castel Paterno is accessible via a country road, just off the main route that leads to Civita Castellana. This interesting archaeological site, once one of the most important strongholds in central Italy, is located in a strategic position above the valley of the River Treja.

In the past, there used to be also a pre-Roman necropolis but its tombs were converted into rupestrian houses during the Middle Ages. 

Castel Paterno was also the temporary residence of the Holy Roman Emperor Otto III, who died here in 1002.
